Numeracy at Mooroolbark East Primary School

At Mooroolbark East Primary School, all teaching staff share a vision for Mathematics that promotes the success of every student. Since 2024, our approach has been guided by the Mathematics 2.0 Victorian Curriculum, ensuring every student has access to engaging, high-quality mathematics instruction and the ability to thrive in a supported environment.

Each week, students engage in a minimum of five hours of Mathematics instruction, focusing on developing skills across the six strands: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability (Grades 3–6). All students are provided with opportunities to engage in collaborative, hands-on activities that enhance their understanding and allow for deeper engagement.
Through authentic, real-world problem-solving tasks, students gain insight into how mathematics is applied in everyday life across each strand.

Our weekly lessons are designed to target specific mathematical strands. Each year level follows a carefully developed Scope and Sequence, ensuring the curriculum is delivered in a sequential and progressive manner. This structured approach allows students to build on prior knowledge, whilst steadily developing their skills, understanding, and confidence, which is an essential component of our instructional model.

Mathematics Support and Intervention

At Mooroolbark East Primary School, we want each child to succeed in Maths. We have implemented the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI), a structured program designed to offer targeted assistance to students in need of additional mathematical support. A key component of this initiative is our fluency program, which systematically develops students’ mathematical fluency, enabling them to achieve greater accuracy, speed, and confidence in fundamental mathematical operations. Through these efforts, we strive to cultivate a robust mathematical foundation that prepares students for continued academic achievement.

Lessons are designed around the four proficiency areas of Understanding, Fluency, Problem-Solving, and Reasoning and these are covered from Grade 1 through to Grade Six.
